Last updated on September 27, 2022

The DOT Hours of Service Log Book Examples are designed to help drivers, supervisors, and auditors achieve proficiency in the HOS regulation. They include examples and plain-English explanations of the requirements. Using a quality Hours of Service Log Book will reduce the potential for a fine or other legal action.

In the U.S. a driver may work 16 hours on an eight-hour shift under certain conditions. These conditions include adverse driving conditions, which extend the limit by two hours. Such conditions can include fog, snow, and unexpected road closures. They do not, however, include traffic congestion during rush hour.

Hours of Service Log book examples help explain the various provisions of the Hours of Service Rules. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has created a book that contains 30 examples of the Hours of Service Rules. This book contains 26 examples of the Hours of Service Rules for property carrying commercial motor vehicles. The book also contains 4 examples of the Hours of Service Rules for passenger carrying vehicles.

Each of the hours of service log book examples in the book include the following:

  • One or more completed grids from a driver’s daily record of duty status (RODS) or log.
  • A brief description of any violations that may exist; and
  • An in-depth explanation of the Hours of Service Rules as they apply to the sample driver’s daily log/record of duty status (RODS).
